Even though Halloween is a very American tradition, it has become pretty popular in South Africa. Themed parties, school dress-ups, trick-or-treating, Halloween is celebrated among adults and kids. So, why not be the mummy of the year by throwing a Halloween-themed party? Covid fatigue is real, and we are all dying to have fun!

What’s more, you choose the theme - Skeletons, Ghosts, you decide! And if you’re stuck, don’t worry, we have the scares up our sleeves with 5 awesome ideas to ensure you’re the ghostess with the mostest! But before we jump into theme ideas, let’s learn a little bit more about Halloween.

What is Halloween?

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on 31 October. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the Christian faith, Halloween marks the day before the Western Christian feast of All Saints and starts the season of Allhallowtide, which lasts three days and concludes with All Souls' Day.

Why Celebrate Halloween?

If you got it, haunt it! Even though you may have been taught that Halloween carries the “devil and sinful” spirits with it, if you read above, you’d understand that to be untrue. Really, Halloween is what you want it to be. So, why celebrate it, especially to finally get out of the Covid funk? Here are some ghostly reasons to celebrate;

  • Escape: Step outside of your comfort zone and become someone else for the day by dressing up in some Fa-boo-lous outfits.
  • Fun: Throw a Halloween party because it’s fun! Plan costume contests and award prizes to the winners.
  • Socialise: Host a Halloween party to get back in touch with old friends and build your relationships with new acquaintances.
  • Celebrate: Eat yummy food, snack on sweet candy, and sip Halloween cocktails.
  • Kids: Make their year even more fun by decorating the house with ghosts and goblins - they will love it!
  • Host: Show off your amazing party planning skills with a Halloween party your guests will never forget. Open your home to all your family and friends and have a blast!

So with all that, what are some of the spooky themes to try?

Haunted House Halloween Theme

There’s nothing quite as spooky or halloweeny as a haunted house. Get the theme eek-tastic by stuffing some old clothes with hay or any other material to make some dead guests, place some plastic tombstones, cobwebs, ghost bunting, and spiders around the house. Lastly, serve creepy punch and ghost treats, and get your guests to all dress to the theme.

Autumn Harvest (American season)

If you’re ready to have a chic Halloween event, not to worry, your Halloween party doesn’t have to be all about monsters and ghouls. For a classier way to decorate, use the autumn colour palette and cute pumpkin and autumn-themed ornaments and decorations. Yes, we have moved into spring, however, Halloween is an American celebration, and right now, they have gone into “fall”.  Set up a few bales of hay for seating, some pumpkins, and gourds, and crunchy leaves and branches will make your party look its best.

Murder Mystery

A murder mystery is a perfect Halloween-themed party idea to entertain both kids and adults. We’ve been to many and simply enjoy the dressing up and story behind it. Murder Mystery parties take a dose of imagination and creativity, but once you form a story with a murderer to pin down, your Halloween party will be a hit with all your guests. You’ll have to think ahead and gear each party invitation to individual guests, making specific costume requests. Once the guests have arrived, let them know the general plot and set up clues throughout the night to help them solve the mystery.

Pumpkin Carving

What better way to celebrate this spooky season than with a pumpkin carving? It’s a massive tradition in the US and is a whole pumpkin of fun! Turn it into a competition where the spookiest win a prize. Once it gets dark outside, display your pumpkins and place a light inside each one to get the glam effect.

Graveyard Horror

Want to host the most skele-fun Halloween-themed party? Well, a Graveyard Horror is the one! Decorate with hay, overhanging branches, leaves, lighting, tombstones, coffins, skeletons, body parts, sound effects, black bags, pumpkins, black lighting, and you’ve just out ghosted everyone!

We hope you have a fang-tastic time!
